Brandywine Battlefield Strategic
Landscapes Preservation Plans
Project Update Meeting: Non-Invasive
Archeology & Historic Landscape Study

Where: Brandywine Battlefield State Park
1491 Baltimore Pike, Chadds Ford
7:00-8:30 P.M.

The Delaware County Planning Department is hosting a meeting on the current progress of the Strategic Landscapes Preservation Plans for the Brandywine Battlefield.

Delaware County’s Strategic Preservation Plans will include an Archeological Design Analysis component conducted by John Milner Associates (JMA), a Cultural Resource Management firm.
The intention of the Archeology Design Analysis is research-based and will not require physical access to private land or ground disturbance. The project’s goal is to verify and build upon previous planning efforts. This meeting will provide an introduction to the Archeology Analysis while also allowing JMA to learn from landowners and local residents about the history of the land and any known archeological information

How Old is Old?

How old something is can get very complicated and everybody looks at things different. I chuckled when I saw a sign that said, "Founded 1934" on a local sign. Yes the building opened in 1934, BUT it was organized, planned, elected directors all in 1933, so was it founded in 1933 or 1934? Myself, I always say when the first meeting was held is one the organization started. Churches are the worst. My church according to the official history was founded in June 1879, but that was two years after the first meetings were held. The June 1879 date is when the church building was opened and dedicated. Some churches go by first meeting, others by cornerstone laying, and still others by dedication. Even first meetings can be hard to come by. A local church first meetings were held in March of 1884, they had the first minute book to prove it. But the local newspaper stated meetings were held some 6 months before in local homes. No one took any notes. Fire companies sometimes do the same thing. Many companies go by when they were chartered by the state and county as when they first started. One local company had their building and fire trucks and were going to calls before they finally got around to getting their charter. But they still go by that charter date! So how old is your organization?

Merry Christmas ! The story of a "mere trifle"

Washington St. In Media aka Baltimore Pike looking east c.1910 in winter

"A mere trifle"

All Clement Clarke Moore could think of was they had not used his name. The Troy, New York Sentinel newspaper had somehow obtained a copy of the poem he had written for his daughter, Charity the year before in December of 1822. Charity, had shared "her' poem with friend, Harriet Butler who had sent the poem to the Troy newspaper anonymously. The poem was titled,
"Something about a Visit from St. Nicholas". Moore who lived in New York City, his home "Chelsea" is the name of a section of Manhattan today was a professor at the General Theological Seminary. Moore had graduated from Columbia College with honors in Oriental Languages and had written a dictionary of the Jewish Language. But he was a poet at heart and often wrote poems for his wife, Catherine and their six children. Christmas Eve of 1822 was no exception. He promised six year old daughter Charity, "something special". Moore got some of the ideas from "The Children's Friend" an anonymous book published in 1821 and Washington Irving's The Knickerbocker's History of New York". But much of the reindeer, stockings etc. came from his own imagination. The poem was read after dinner, twice by request and that was it. Or so Moore thought. Unaware that his daughter, Charity had shared "her" poem, he was stunned to see it in the newspaper the next year in 1823, but thankful his name had not been used. As a professor, writing children's poetry would have been frowned upon and Moore did not want fellow professors making fun of him. What shocked Moore was that the poem took off like wildfire, being published hundreds of times in newspapers and books thru out the country. Finally in 1837 he included the poem under his name for the first time in a book he was editing on New York State Poetry. Moore never really understood what all the fuss over his poem was all about. He was asked numerous times to write the poem out in his own hand, but he almost always refused. Only two copies are known to exist. As Moore himself once wrote, "It was a mere trifle, one that been found to afford far greater pleasure that what was by myself deemed of more worth".
Merry Christmas to all my blog readers!!
